Bio

Blanka Morikawa (b. 1988) is a Czech abstract painter based in Prague.

Her work is driven by instinct, play and a curiosity about what happens when the need to control the outcome is let go. She approaches painting as an open-ended process, allowing marks, colours, shapes and ideas to develop naturally rather than working towards a fixed image.

Working primarily with acrylic and charcoal on raw canvas, Morikawa combines loose gestural marks, soft colour, spontaneous drawing and handwritten text.

Her paintings often move between quiet and energetic, delicate and unruly, with unexpected shapes or fragments appearing alongside more spacious, restrained passages.

For Morikawa, painting is less about getting something right and more about paying attention to what happens along the way. The works carry traces of this process, capturing fleeting thoughts, impulses and moments of uncertainty. Rather than offering a fixed interpretation, they leave space for the viewer to make their own connections.
